What is your answer? Would you sit next to the person smoking or the person with the COVID-19 Virus?
Unfortunately, we do not actually get to make this decision. We can see a person who is smoking, however we do not know if a person has the COVID-19 Virus. Since we ban smoking in most public places, because of the dangers of exposing others to second-hand smoke, it would be logical to ban exposing others to the COVID-19 Virus.
Unfortunately, since less than 2% of the American public has been tested for the Virus, we do not know if we are exposing others to the virus of not. The 2% of the American public who have been tested have generated over 750,000 confirmed cases of the COVID-19 Virus. If we tested 100% of the American public, would that expose 37 Million COVID-19 cases in the country?
I saw a protester of the current Social Distancing regulations. She holding a picture of a mask. The mask in the picture had a circle around it, and a line going through it. This person was protesting the fact that she had to wear a mask. I assume she was stating that she has the right to expose herself to the COVID-19 Virus. SHE DOES, but does she have the right to expose others to it?
In Pennsylvania, it is legal to ride a motorcycle without a helmet on. It is their right to do so. However, their decision only effects them, and not others.
Since a person can have the COVID-19 Virus, and not have any symptoms, we all have to assume that we might have it, and if we care at all about other people, we should do our part to prevent exposing others to the virus.
Will we publicly shame people who do not wear masks in public? I remember when I was a smoker, and walked past a non-smoker, while I was holding a cigarette, some of them would cover their mouth or start coughing. This was their way of publicly shaming me for smoking. People who quit smoking can be like “Born Again Christians”, who act all self-righteous.
What type of person would protest regulations whose only objective is to help save lives? I think we can rule out any “Pro-Life” people. It would be hard to believe a person could be Pro-Life, and also be opposed to something designed to help save lives.
I totally understand the stress that so many people are experiencing. We want to be able to provide food, clothing and shelter to our families. We want to get out of the house. We want our lives back.
The question is: Can we open up the country and all do our part to protect ourselves and others?
At the end of the day, it is not going to be Trump or either the Republican or Democratic Parties that will determine the outcome of this crisis. The final outcome lies with the American people, and we are only as strong as our weakest link.
So yes, while we try to protect ourselves and others from the COVID-19 Virus, we should PUBLICLY SHAME THOSE THAT DO NOT.
